Well he is finally here, Liam Blake Kuppersmith. Liam arrived on June 1st at 11:34 weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces and was 21 inches long. We couldn't be happier to have him home and healthy.
It all started Sunday night around 11:45 when I thought my water was breaking. It wasn't a sudden big gush of water, more like a trickle but as soon as I got out of bed, I knew what it was. We called the doctor and headed to the hospital. We got checked in and were in our room by 12:30am. It was a good thing we were packed and didn't waste any time because my contractions were immediately 5 minutes or less apart. I was in quite a bit of pain and swore that when the doctor or nurse checked me that I would be several centimeters dilated. I later found out I must have a low tolerance for pain because it was only going to get worse. I was only 1 centimeter dilated when they checked. We waited throughout the night and the doctor came in again about 4 hours later and I was 5 cm dilated. This was great news because my body was doing exactly what it needed to do. Unfortunately, there were two times when Liam's heart rate dropped and the words "c-section" were discussed. I just kept praying the whole time that his heart rate would stay up. It did and when I was checked again, I was still only 5cm. They waited a little longer and I was at 8cm. That is when they decided to put me on a very small amount of pitocin to finish out the delivery. I have to say that the epidural was the best thing that ever happened to me. I give a lot of credit to those of you that have gone without. The delivery was short, I pushed for 30 minutes. The whole things was so calm and simple. I don't know what I expected but it went better than I could have imagined. It was amazing to hear Liam cry for the first time. The first thing I noticed were his hands....they are huge. We waited in the room while the nurses bathed him and got both of us ready to go. After a couple hours, we were off to our more permanent room
Aboutt 3:30 that afternoon, I began feeling not quite right. I called in my nurse and within minutes there were about 4 nurses and my doctor was back. I ended up hemorrhaging. I won't go into the details, but it was some of the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. It was also very scary. The doctors and nurses got things back under control and gave me lots of different meds to get my body to do what it was supposed to do in the first place. Blake was a champ. He stayed in the room for it all and changed every diaper in the hospital for the next two days since I really couldn't get out of bed. Thankfully, I did not lose enough blood to need a transfusion. I just have to take lots of iron supplements to regain what was lost.
We came home on Wednesday. Both sets of grandparents greeted us and stayed for several days. We had so much help, which was greatly appreciated while I was recovering. Both of us slept and tried to take it easy. My mom is still here helping out and my brother and his wife are coming this weekend.
We love our little guy so much. Sometimes we just pick him up and hold him even if he is sleeping (during the day that is). He is feeding about every 2-3 hours and doing very well. At his first doctor's appointment last Friday, we were told that he had gained his weight back and then some and was now 8 pounds. All other signs were healthy and normal. The nurse said she thinks he is going to be built like his Dad.
Our days seem to fill up and before I know it, all of the "to do's" on my list are getting pushed to the next day again. I am not worrying about it much. We want to enjoy every minute with Liam. Here are some pictures from our first week home.
